Arriving from the south

At Newby bridge, at the south end of Windermere Lake, turn right off the A590 up the west side of Windermere Signed ‘Lakeside' and ‘Windermere lake cruises'. Stay on this road passing the Swan Hotel. After 9 miles as you come to Hawkshead, turn left up a narrow road signed to Grizedale on a brown sign. Head over the hill and after about 3 miles, park in the Kennels car park on your right. If kennels car park is full, drive a little further to Hall Car park on the left.

Total time from Newby Bridge 40 minutes.

 

Arriving from the North

From Ambleside at the North end of Windermere Lake, follow the signs at first to Coniston and Langdale on the A593 (West). In Clappersgate (1/2 mile), take the left, signed Hawkshead B5286 for 5 miles. Follow the road round the village and turn right at the T-junction at the end. There is a School on your right and just after the yard, turn right up a narrow road, signed Grizedale on a brown sign. Head over the hill and after about 3 miles, park in the Kennels car park on your right.

Total time from Ambleside approx 40 minutes.

In both cases

Do not use the ferry, it will delay your journey and you may miss your Go Ape Session. Also, there are no road Signs to Go Ape so please follow the brown tourist signs to Grizedale forest.

From Kennels road car park once parked

Head right out of the car park and over the bridge. Walk down the path by the stream in the direction of the flow of water. The Go Ape cabin is signed from here. You walk past some of the course before emerging next to the cabin. Time from Kennels Road to Cabin - 10 minutes. There are no toilets on the way from hear so you may wish to allow extra time to visit these.

From Hall car park once parked

Walk up the car park. At the top of the car park follow the signs to Go Ape. You will walk over the road, through the short tunnel and in to the courtyard. Here you will find the toilets. From here, go down the steps/ramp and turn right. Go over the bridge and you will see the cabin in the corner.Time from Hall car park to Cabin - 12 minutes.

Please note, the old Millwood Car park is closed. There is also ongoing building work in Grizedale and you should allow a little extra time for this.

By Train - The best destinations to aim for by train are Grange-over-Sands to the South, then take a bus or taxi, or Windermere to the East and then bus or taxi.

The TransPennine Express operates a service from Manchester to Barrow-in-Furness, Grange-over-Sands, Windermere and other destinations.

By Bus - The Coniston Rambler (service 505), operated by Stagecoach, links Coniston with Windermere via Ambleside and Hawkshead. The service runs daily all year round. Contact Traveline for details on t:0870 608 2 608 or visit traveline.org.uk  or stagecoachbus.com

Coach access is from the South only via the A590 turning at Greenodd. Take the next right signed Colton and Oxen Park, follow this road and the coach parking is in Hall car park.

The Cross Lakes Shuttle links Bowness-on-Windermere with Hawkshead, Grizedale Forest and Coniston (cycle carriage available). This service combines bus and boat and operates at weekends, school holidays and bank holidays from Easter to the end of October and daily throughout July, August and September. Travellers should be aware that the bus service runs from Windermere at 0900 and returns from the forest at 1300.
